Culverton Smith is a bluff northern entrepreneur and philanthropist with a great big cheesy snaggle-toothed grin, a hugely famous and adored popular personality who raises vast amounts for charity. But in the depths of his hideous soul Smith is a monster, hiding in plain sight… hmm, remind you of anyone?
The brilliant Toby Jones is Smith, by turns garrulous, joshing and debauched. He’s wicked and manipulative, and Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) is out to get him.
Sherlock is unusually (even for him) obsessed by Smith as he festers, unshaven, drug-addled and lonely in 221B Baker Street. Steven Moffat’s story takes Sherlock to some bad places in his ravaged mind, while John Watson (Martin Freeman, who’s wonderful) wrestles with his own particular darkness.
It’s another heart-twisting episode that might bring you to tears, or it might make you long for the playful Sherlock and John of old. Or both.
Summary
The detective faces a dangerous new enemy in the seemingly unassailable Culverton Smith, a man whose position of power conceals a terrible secret. Estranged from John, Sherlock must confront his demons to defeat his enemy's plans. Toby Jones guest stars as the villain alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

In a Holmes story titled “The Adventure of the Yellow Face,” Sherlock rushes too quickly to a conclusion and winds up being wrong. It’s a rare slip. He misses the solution, which lies in the town of Norbury, south-west of London. Afterwards, he tells Watson, “If it should ever strike you that I am getting a little overconfident in my powers, or giving less pains to a case than it deserves, kindly whisper ‘Norbury’ in my ear, and I shall be infinitely obliged to you.” Gatiss and Moffat lifted that dialogue almost line for line, and put Mrs. Hudson in Watson’s place. [...] But speaking of Norbury (the lady, not the town), is it possible she was associated somehow with Moriarty? She does drop a line that Moriarty—or at least, a Moriarty proxy—used in “The Great Game.” Could Sherlock be right in his seemingly paranoid conviction that all villainous roads lead to Moriarty? [...] One of Mary’s aliases when she’s on the run is “Gabrielle Ashdown.” Ashdown was an alias used by Holmes in the 1970 film The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes—a favorite of Mark Gatiss. [...]“Appointment at Sumatra.” This is a reference to a Doyle case that the book version of Holmes said “the world is not yet ready for.” The title: “The Giant Rat of Sumatra.” Another Gatiss favorite. [...] Why Kill Mary?: No one seems especially thrilled by how this episode of Sherlock went about disposing of Mary Watson—and the fandom seems pretty divided on whether or not her death is a good thing. Those who were tired of spycraft getting mixed into the detective series, or who resented Mrs. Watson getting in the way of the homoerotic subtext between John and Sherlock, were happy to see the back of her. Others who thought Abbington brought a nice, tart addition to the central trio were sad to see her go. But Mary was always going to die eventually, just as she does in the books. And, as Moffat points out, the show gave her a more central send-off than Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote her out with a vague mournful comment from John in-between adventures. [...] But in the end, as is increasingly the case with TV these days, Mary died in order to motivate the male characters at the center of the show. They better make it worth it.

*** На сайте IMDb появился оригинальный анонс TFP: Шерлок путешествует по Европе, чтобы избежать мести Мориарти. Звучит как анонс к этому рассказу у АКД. Насколько достоверно, вопрос. BBC дает совсем другой.
*** The NYTimes прокомментировали стихотворный ответ Гейтисса на критиканство в The Telegraph. И написали свое стихотворное послание Гейтиссу, в целом довольно милое, причем констатировали, что м-р Гейтисс в своем послании был гораздо мягче, чем когда-то был Конан Дойль: “Sure there are times when one cries with acidity, ‘Where are the limits of human stupidity?’”

*** Статья в Radiotimes. Gatiss said Freeman “blew the mic” with the guttural wail of grief made by his character when he realises that Mary has died. Freeman said that he improvised that howl of anguish in the moment.
“That was all me baby,” Freeman revealed at a Q and A after the screening of the episode. “It’s difficult. You are kind of always – I am – always on the verge of acting badly. You work up to a point where you could get caught out acting badly, especially where it’s your wife on telly and who we are in real life. You have to do it justice obviously, but it’s very easy to overdo it. It’s a careful line to walk. 'And… act that Amanda’s just been shot'. That’s pretty difficult. That’s pretty tough even when you know it’s coming in the schedule. It's pretty difficult."
Benedict Cumberbatch joked “it was a walk in the park" before adding: “It was emotional. We get the hit that the audience hopefully gets when they watch it when we first read it. So that was always going to be a moment in the schedule, and it was. It was a big moment.
"Three became two and this incredibly important part of what Sherlock is, is suddenly no more, in the most violent way imaginable. And a mother as well as a wife and a dear friend and brilliant, and you discover more about her just as you lose her as well. It was a great bit of tipping someone over the edge of a cliff as soon as you are most in love with them. It was a very upsetting scene." Все это чУдно, но почему я ничего такого не почувствовала?

Он никакой не сверхчеловек, он человек из плоти и крови, которому… свойственно ошибаться."

*** Газета The Sun советует посмотреть сегодня "Шерлока", никакой эмоциональной передышки нам не обещают, наоборот! Best-ever episode? It could very well be.
*** Masterpiece выложили в твиттере фрагмент интервью Мартина, где он объясняет, почему Джон обвиняет Шерлока в смерти Мэри. СПОЙЛЕР! МФ говорит, что Джон, несомненно, поторопился, погорячился в своем горе от смерти Мэри, впал в шоковое состояние. Конечно, он понимает, что Ш. не супергерой, не в состоянии остановить пулю. Джон знает это. Просто у Джона столько всего накопилось против Шерлока за время их дружбы — все это вылилось в эти слова и сцену. И Джон очень любит Шерлока, просто Джон считает Шерлока невыносимым также. Конечно, это не повод для того чтобы обрубать связи между ними, они все еще заботятся друг о друге. Но теперь Джон одинокий отец с младенцем, вдовец и он полностью опустошен и в отчаянии. Бедняга, жаль его. (Нет)

Martin: Grief is a hard thing to play. ... it's such an extreme state of mind and state of being that if you're not feeling it's quite tricky. You have to dig a bit, and when necessary you have to just make it up. ... I think John's always feels to me like he's on the verge of stopping himself either exploding or slapping someone or something ... all the stuff that I felt about Sherlock anyway as John is being given voice and is being given full reign. Because, Sherlock has always pissed John off. Always. As well as loving him, he also wants to slap him quite a lot of the time, and I think this is John's way of giving vent to that. He's allowing the loss of his wife to give him license to go, "Yeah, and it's your fault, you f***er. It was you. You said you would look after her and you didn't." And of course, like most of those things, it’s misplaced because what John's really thinking is, "I couldn't look after her. I didn't stop her from dying, but rather than dealing with that, I'm going to blame you.

О Euros: "It's a massive bomb that has dropped for that family, for the Holmes family. ... I never did that scene where her identity is revealed without a chill running up my spine. So, however many takes we did, I always felt cold as it was revealed. I loved it, loved it." ... "It changes everything for the Holmes brothers. And as a result, if something changes that deeply for Sherlock, then something has to change a little bit for John, because they're best friends."

I think, sometimes he genuinely does not have an idea, and we see that, certainly, in the earlier episodes of the show, but then other times, I think, there is a little glint in the eye, almost invisible glint in the eye, where he knows, but he's just doesn't care, maybe."

You know, "I don't want to be anywhere near you, now," because of course, I don't know what to do with these feelings, so I'm going to have to blame my best friend, because he's the only other person in the world who I really care about. So, he has to blame Sherlock or he'll just die, or he'll just kill himself, or something. So, it all goes on Sherlock's shoulders, and he hates Sherlock for that time being until he has to acknowledge that maybe he doesn't hate him. ... it was not easy, basically. Not easy, and I may well have done some bad acting, and I really hope I haven't, come January the first. So, apologies if I have."

🔴13/01/17 Не хочу читать спойлеры. Но, наверное, буду (Нет. Да...) Хотя может, их нужно читать? Из-за слов Марка вчера на предпоказе: "This MIGHT be the episode." — Это может быть эпизодом. Тут народ вспомнил, что девиз: "It's not a game anymore" спёрт у фильма "Улика" (Clue, 1985г.), снятого по мотивам игры CLuedo (знакомой нам). И этот фильм был замечателен тем, что у него были альтернативные концовки, которые показывались в разных кинотеатрах, и только на видеокассете с фильмом были собраны они все, и можно было выбрать в меню, какой вариант ты хочешь смотреть. Этим может объясняться такой ранний прескрининг TFP — тролли, останутся троллями до конца.
